From now through mid-November, Cedar Hill has something on the calendar almost every week. Most of the season lands on two dates. Three hosts plan their own fall programs: Cedar Hill State Park, Dogwood Canyon Audubon Center, and the City of Cedar Hill. Each posts to its own calendar. On Saturday, October 17, and Saturday, November 7, those calendars overlap. Taken together, they turn each of those days into a route.
The weeknights and quieter weekends fill in around those two dates. Here is the season in order, starting with the dates that will need the most planning.
October 17: The Harvest Festival and the Plant Sale on the Same Morning
Texas Parks and Wildlife lists the Harvest Heritage Festival at Cedar Hill State Park for Saturday, October 17, starting at 10 a.m. The park describes it as its "biggest annual event," with food, fun, and games.
That same Saturday, the city's calendar lists the Dogwood Canyon Fall Plant Sale at Dogwood Canyon Audubon Center from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. The plant sale opens an hour before the festival starts. The fall gardening schedule that follows at Dogwood Canyon gives that hour some extra value.
The Audubon center's October lineup leans heavily toward home landscaping. After the sale, its visit page lists these programs:
- October 18: Guided Tree ID Walk
- October 20: Grasses are Great! Native Texas Grasses Landscaping Workshop
- October 21: Peace in the Prairie
- October 22: Gorgeous Groundcovers Landscaping Workshop
- October 23: Intro to Companion Plant Gardening Workshop
Three of those five are planting workshops, and they fall within six days of the sale. Someone who buys native grasses or groundcovers at the sale can be in a workshop on those same plants within the week. The Audubon page lists these programs by month and day only. The city's calendar confirms the grasses and groundcovers workshops for this October, so check the other three dates against the center's ticket listings before you go. The center's regular hours are Wednesday through Saturday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Sunday from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. It is closed Monday and Tuesday. Check registration details for the October 20 workshop directly with the center.
The Week After: Penn Farm After Dark, Then a Full State Park Weekend
The state park's busiest stretch runs from October 23 to October 25. On Friday, October 23, at 6:30 p.m., the park hosts a Haunted History Walk and Trunk-or-Treat. The park's listing asks whether "the rumors of Penn Farm's haunted nature" are true. Penn Farm Agricultural History Center is also open daily for self-guided visits, and groups can call to arrange guided tours. If you want to see the farm in daylight before the Friday walk, any day of the week works.
The next day and the day after are full:
| Date | Time | Program | Note |
|---|---|---|---|
| Sat., Oct. 24 | 9 a.m. | October Fishing 101 | Registration required |
| Sat., Oct. 24 | 1 p.m. | Drop-In Archery 101 | Drop-in |
| Sun., Oct. 25 | 7 p.m. | October Full Moon Hike | Under the Hunter's Moon |
| Sat., Oct. 31 | 1 p.m. | Animal Encounter: Snakes of Texas | Live snakes |
Fishing 101 is the only one of these that requires registration, so it is the one to book early. The Snakes of Texas encounter on Halloween afternoon ends well before trick-or-treating. It fits families who want a park outing earlier in the day.
Downtown, the city lists Scare on the Square for Thursday, October 29, from 6 to 8 p.m. in Historic Downtown Cedar Hill at 600 Cedar St. It falls between the park's Friday night walk and its Halloween snake program. That gives the week three Halloween events from two different hosts, spread across three evenings and an afternoon.
Trail Status Changes With the Rain
Fall programs at both nature sites depend on the weather, and both have posted closures recently. In a trail notice dated Thursday, October 8, 2026, Texas Parks and Wildlife said the DORBA mountain bike trails were closed. Talala, Plum Valley, Duck Pond, Penn Farm and Shoreline trails were open. The park's alert page warns more generally that trails may close for wet weather or maintenance.
At Dogwood Canyon, the trail status table dated October 7 shows the Canyon Floor, West Loop and Dogwood trails all open. The center's homepage still showed an October 1 closure notice for heavy rain. The newer table is probably the current one. A quick call before driving over settles it. The center covers more than 200 acres with three miles of trails, a children's Nature Play area, and a picnic area.
One more thing to know before heading to the lake: Texas Parks and Wildlife lists Joe Pool Marina as permanently closed. Lake swimming, fishing and boating are still part of how the park describes itself.
The Campsites Are Back for the First Fall Since 2022
For anyone tempted to camp close to home this fall, the state park has more room than it has had in years. On July 23, 2026, Texas Parks and Wildlife announced that the Shady Ridge Camping Loop had reopened. The loop had been closed since 2022 for repairs and renovations. It had closed once before, after a 2015 flood eroded the shoreline on Joe Pool Lake.
The loop now has 68 campsites, including four new ADA-accessible sites, all with 30-amp electricity and running water. The work included a repaved road, new camping pads, new picnic tables and covered tables, and two new restrooms. The July release also said a group tent campsite would open soon. It will be a first for the park and is also ADA-accessible.
Camping at Shady Ridge on Friday, October 23, puts you inside the park for the Haunted History Walk that evening, Fishing 101 Saturday morning, and archery that afternoon. You would not need to drive in for any of them.
The second loop is less certain. In the same July release, the agency said the Eagle Ford loop, with its longer pads and full-hookup back-in sites, was "poised to be accessible in the fall." Once it reopens, the park will be back to full capacity. As of early October, nothing we found confirms that it has reopened. Check the park's reservation information before planning a trip around it.
November 7: Three Events, Three Locations, One Morning
The second big Saturday has the most overlap of the season. The city calendar lists all three of these on November 7:
- Dogwood Canyon First Saturday, 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., at Dogwood Canyon Audubon Center.
- Lester Lorch Park 50th Anniversary Celebration, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., at 1823 Texas Plume Road.
- Shop Small Cedar Hill Neighborhood Market, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., at Pioneer Park, 600 Cedar St.
The start times make the order easy. Dogwood Canyon opens first, at 8:30. The two city events both start at 10 and run until 2, so you can visit them in either order after leaving the canyon. The city's listing for the Lester Lorch anniversary does not describe the program yet. Watch the city calendar as the date gets closer. A park reaching 50 years is a rare milestone on any local calendar.
The Neighborhood Market at Pioneer Park shares its 600 Cedar St. address with Scare on the Square. The historic downtown square hosts both of the city's main gatherings this fall.
November 14 Closes the Season
The last item on the season's calendar is a volunteer day. According to the city's release, Fall Beautification Day is Saturday, November 14, at Traphene Hickman Library and Signature Park, 450 Pioneer Trail. Cleanup runs from 9 a.m. to noon, and a habitat restoration project at Signature Park runs from 9 to 11 a.m. The city's November calendar summary lists 8 to 11 a.m. instead, so confirm the start time before you go.
What's Coming Next
Two projects should add to future seasons. On August 26, the city announced that City Council had approved plans for a Go Ape Adventure Park in Midtown Cedar Hill. The plans include ziplines, rope bridges and canopy walks. The same announcement said a $9 million Cinemark upgrade was underway. Neither has a published opening date, and the city has not given an address for Go Ape. For now, the Harvest Heritage Festival, the Dogwood Canyon programs, and the November 7 events cover the season.
